Dither to SVG
A Figma plugin that turns any image into a properly dithered, pixel-perfect SVG.
Every image on this site has been through this plugin, from the book covers on Reading to the icons on Uses. I built it to give the site its look, and so I can turn out cover images for posts (and, eventually, Beyond Pixels episodes) in minutes.
Pixel art is one thing AI still gets wrong. It looks fine at a glance, but nothing sits on a pixel grid, and it falls apart the moment you scale it. I learned that at Flutter, when AI visuals with a “pixel” look would land on my desk with one request: “Can you just make this work for a large print?” Spoiler: you can’t.
Figma’s new shaders and effects make dithering easy. Making it look like every pixel was placed by hand is the hard bit, and that’s what this plugin does. It snaps everything to a true grid and exports a clean SVG that scales to any size.
